Lolita's Personality
Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They are prone to becoming bored and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners don't interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they also make wonderful pets for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their adoration for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or near children who might be startled by their noise.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are difficult to tell apart. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to go back to the sea.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is aging quickly and that her health is deteriorating.
It is not clear what health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor isn't required to share this information. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

The move comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
